You just ordered your brand new carbon fiber paddle shiny and new. Overly ripe with anticipation, you can’t wait to tear into that big long cardboard box and reveal the long black gem inside. It finally arrives. After busting through the box tape, you pull it out, stand it up next to you and gaze up at the handle . . . ah, the perfect height. Then, as you look down, your eyes glaze over as you find yourself staring at a “broken blade”. You grumble out loud, “They put that thing on crooked.” Hold on there Buddy, it’s supposed to be crooked. Most stand up paddles on the market today feature an angled blade. What’s it all about? Read on . . .

The angled blade found on the vast majority of the stand up paddles on the market today has its roots in outrigger canoe paddle design. The blades are normally angled somewhere between 10-12 degrees. Although it seems counterintuitive, when you hold your new paddle, the blade should be angled forward and away from you. On most paddles, this puts the paddle company logo facing forward.

There are three main reasons why the blade is angled forward. First, the angle of the blade allows the stroke to begin further away from your body while maintaining a solid grip on the paddle shaft. This makes for a longer, more powerful stroke. Secondly, at the beginning of the stroke, the angled blade pushes down on the water before pulling straight back. This downward push relieves some of the pressure off the nose of the board, releasing it from the surface tension of the water and setting the board for better forward glide. Finally, at the conclusion of the stroke, which should end at your heels, the angle allows the blade to come clean from water without lifting water as you recover your stroke, which would in turn push the tail of the board down and stifle your glide.

Will all stand up paddles forever have an angled blade? Nope. In fact several companies such as Infinity in Dana Point, California, have stand up paddles with straighter blades that many agree are the most efficient paddles available. However, for now it is the angled outrigger blade design that has been embraced by the vast majority of the industry.

Ten gorgeous Suplove boards just arrived! Between their awesome craftmanship and new colorful art VersaTrak pads, Suplove has outdone themselves! Don’t miss out on a new board. Also, at unbeatable prices, are 4 new Riviera SUP boards. The 10’6 and 11’6 boards are perfect for first time buyers at $785! In addition to the Riviera line up is a demo Voyager.
The Riviera 12’6″ Voyager is a perfect board for first time paddlers, and the most stable board Riviera makes. The voyager is designed for someone who wants to paddle flatwater or mild open ocean conditions. It has all the features of a raceboard but has been toned down making it more stable and user friendly. It is equipped with 14 leash plugs on the nose and tail to tie down all your gear. The Displacement hull make this board cut through the water efficiently, making long paddles much easier than a standard surfboard shape cruiser.

The Surf Blue Ridge SUP event is the 2012 home for a WPA National Event and Mid-South Region Championship on Sept. 14,15 & 16 and SUP Splash event.

This is a national WPA sanctioned event as well as Region 11 Mid-South Championship. Paddlers not in Region 11 can still pick up points toward national rankings in this event. After a stellar season of SUPSplash races last year, we have added three more event sites. Three of those will happen after the Blue Ridge race and will count for overall SUPSplash series champion points, separate from the WPA Regional series. We anticipate large registration numbers for this event. Keep tuned in for registration info as it unfolds.

The Surf Blue Ridge event will be a 3 day celebration of SUP. In addition to the WPA sanctioned race events and SUP Splash stop at Lake Blue Ridge, there are fun events for those I hope make the trek to Blue Ridge as a destination. On Friday the 14th, everyone in town meet up at race site for a Sunset paddle session so paddlers from all over can meet and share a mellow evening paddle session. Gather by fire circle and listen to acoustic musicians. On Saturday the 15th, SUP Splash and WPA events will begin at 11 A.M. with a water start. These events include a Beginner/short race of 2 miles with “surf style” boards only, maximum length 12’2″. The 8 mile Long/Elite race includes men 12’6, 14′ and Unlimited. Awards and points for gender and race category. In addition, for those beyond beginner, yet not quite ready for Elite class, I’ll have a 4 mile Intermediate division for race or surf style boards. Men 12’6 and 14, women 12’6 and Seniors. There must be a minimum of four entries for a class to happen. About an hour after these events, we’ll have team and individual sprints. Finally, for all dog owners there will be a short race with your dogs on board. This year a lunch will be included for each participant.Following the day of races, a night party with food and live music.

On Sunday, for those staying the day, a paddle down the beautiful Toccoa River. A 7 mile trip from the Blue Ridge dam to Curtis Switch. Crystal clear water, wildflowers and wildlife abound. This is an easy class 1 section with several play waves for surfing. Water is deep enough to ride any type board without worry of hitting rocks. Hopefully, many will plan with idea of making your trip a destination for family and enjoy the Blue Ridge area. Only 45 minutes away is the famous Ocoee River that offers insane white water rafting and canopy zipline tours. We’ll do our best to make this a memorable race and vacation spot to escape late summer heat!

Multi-Chamber Inflatable Technology (MCIT)

Characteristics in the existing drop stitch technology used by most inflatable board makers limit the ability to incorporate performance enhancing design elements. The nature of the drop stitch material is that it has a consistent thickness, therefore design variations have been limited to outline shape and rocker curve.

Badfish teamed with Boardworks on new technology that has enabled us to make Inflatable SUP’s with design elements that were previously only possible in hard boards. With MCIT we are incorporating tapered rails, with a larger diameter in the mid section than the thickness of the main deck tapering to smaller diameter in the nose and tail. This enables the boards to have greater stability and to be more responsive than other inflatable’s. These new boards also have a stepped down deck, lowering the paddler’s center of gravity and a type of stringer system, where the chambers connect, resulting in a significantly more rigid inflatable. This all makes the Boardworks/Badfish new inflatables an excellent choice for all levels of SUP, including entry level, school’s, touring, as well as advanced river running and surfing.
